In which version the patent grant started in GPL?

Hi all,

First I want to thank you for the awesome work, and also I want to ask
in which version the patent grant (implied or not) started in GPL?

Recently there was a discussion in trisquel-users mailing list in which
I mentioned the importance of copyleft and licenses such as GPL and AGPL
([1][2]), after some time we got some replies ([3][4]) mentioning that the
patent grant only applies to GPL-3.0 onwards, while the Copyleft Guide
says that it applies to version 2 onwards (version 2 being implied, and
afterwards made explicit in the license text).
